Red lead oxide, also known as minium or lead tetroxide (Pb3O4), is a bright red or orange-red crystalline powder formed through the oxidation of metallic lead in the presence of air. It is distinct from other lead oxides due to its composition of two PbO units and one Pb2O3 unit. Red lead oxide finds extensive use as a pigment in paints, where it imparts a durable red color and enhances resistance to corrosion and weathering. In addition to its role as a pigment, red lead oxide is utilized in the production of lead-acid batteries, acting as a component in electrodes to improve conductivity and performance. However, red lead oxide is highly toxic if ingested or inhaled, requiring careful handling and disposal procedures to prevent environmental contamination and health hazards associated with lead exposure.
