Liquid adipic acid is a water-soluble organic compound with the chemical formula C6H10O4. It is a dicarboxylic acid, commonly found as a colorless, odorless liquid at room temperature. Adipic acid is used primarily as a precursor in the production of nylon, specifically nylon 6,6, which is widely used in textiles, carpets, and automotive applications due to its strength and durability. It also serves as a component in the production of polyurethane foams and plasticizers. In addition to industrial applications, adipic acid is utilized in food additives and pharmaceuticals. It is considered safe for consumption in small quantities and is generally recognized as safe (GRAS) by regulatory agencies. Adipic acid is synthesized through oxidation of various cycloalkanes or by fermentation of glucose and xylose.
