Calcium chloride dihydrate is a crystalline salt with the chemical formula CaCl2·2H2O. It appears as white flakes or granules and is highly soluble in water, releasing heat upon dissolution. This hygroscopic compound absorbs moisture from the air, making it effective for dehumidifying and drying processes. Industrially, it serves as a desiccant, catalyst in chemical reactions, and additive in concrete to accelerate setting times and improve strength. In food and beverage industries, it functions as a firming agent and preservative, enhancing texture and extending shelf life. Calcium chloride dihydrate is also used in refrigeration systems to lower the freezing point of water-based solutions, preventing pipes from freezing. While beneficial in numerous applications, careful handling is necessary due to its exothermic nature when dissolved in water and its potential to corrode metals in high concentrations.
