The cowboy hat is a high-crowned, wide-brimmed hat best known as the defining piece of attire for the North American cowboy. The hat is possibly the most defining staple of the cowboy's iconic image. The round, curved brim and pinched crown has made the cowboy hat the most recognized piece of Western wear, but it didn't always have this look. Although the felt hat came first, straw cowboy hats became a popular choice for cowboys of the American Southwest because they block the sun while providing some ventilation.
