Brown lead oxide, also known as lead(III) oxide or lead sesquioxide, has the chemical formula Pb2O3. It appears as a brownish-red powder and is an intermediate oxide of lead between lead(II) oxide (PbO) and lead(IV) oxide (PbO2). Brown lead oxide is less common than other lead oxides but still finds niche applications. It is primarily used as a pigment in ceramics and glass industries, where it imparts a reddish-brown color to glazes and enamels. Additionally, it is utilized in the production of certain types of lead-acid batteries, where it contributes to the formation of stable electrodes. Due to the toxic nature of lead, precautions are necessary during its handling and processing.
