A synoptophore is a specialized instrument used in ophthalmology to assess and treat certain vision disorders, particularly those related to binocular vision and depth perception. It consists of two separate optical systems connected by a hinge, allowing each eye to view a different image simultaneously. This enables the ophthalmologist to diagnose and treat conditions such as strabismus (eye misalignment) and amblyopia (lazy eye) by training the eyes to work together properly. The synoptophore is particularly useful in evaluating how well the eyes coordinate and perceive depth cues, which is essential for normal vision.
