sulfonic acid

Sulfonic acid refers to a class of organic compounds characterized by the presence of a sulfonic functional group (-SO3H). These compounds are derivatives of sulfuric acid (H2SO4), where one hydroxyl group (-OH) is replaced by a sulfonic group. Sulfonic acids are highly acidic and water-soluble, making them versatile reagents in organic synthesis and industrial processes. They are widely used as catalysts, acidifiers, and surfactants in various applications, including the production of detergents, dyes, and pharmaceuticals. Due to their strong acidity and stability under harsh conditions, sulfonic acids are preferred in many chemical reactions over other acidic functional groups. Additionally, they find use in polymerization reactions and as ion exchange resins in water treatment processes, highlighting their importance in diverse fields.
