Potassium bromide, chemical formula KBr, is a crystalline salt composed of potassium and bromine. It is colorless and odorless, often found as a white powder or in cubic crystals. With a high melting point of 734°C, it is soluble in water, producing a salty taste. Historically used in photography as a photographic emulsion binder, it has also been employed in medicine as an anticonvulsant to treat seizures. Potassium bromide acts as a sedative in veterinary medicine to calm anxious animals. In industry, it serves as a precursor for the synthesis of other bromine compounds and as a flame retardant. Despite its applications, prolonged exposure or ingestion can lead to toxicity, affecting the central nervous and gastrointestinal systems.
