Mircera (methoxy polyethylene glycol-epoetin beta) injections are a form of erythropoiesis-stimulating agent (ESA) used to treat anemia associated with chronic kidney disease (CKD) in patients on dialysis or not on dialysis. It works by stimulating the bone marrow to produce more red blood cells, thus reducing the need for blood transfusions. Mircera is administered less frequently than other ESAs due to its extended half-life, typically once monthly or less frequently for maintenance therapy. It offers convenience and potentially improves patient compliance compared to shorter-acting ESAs. As a biologic drug, Mircera is not available as a generic, but biosimilar versions may be developed in the future. Common side effects include hypertension, headache, and injection site reactions. Close monitoring of hemoglobin levels is necessary to avoid risks of cardiovascular events and thromboembolism.
