Cobalt oxide refers to several chemical compounds containing cobalt and oxygen, primarily cobalt(II) oxide (CoO) and cobalt(III) oxide (Co2O3). Cobalt(II) oxide is a blackish-gray solid with semiconducting properties, widely used as a catalyst in chemical production and as a pigment in ceramics and glassmaking to produce blue hues. It also plays a crucial role in battery technology, particularly in lithium-ion batteries, where it improves stability and performance. Cobalt(III) oxide, on the other hand, is a reddish-brown solid and is less common but also utilized in ceramics and as a precursor in the synthesis of other cobalt compounds. Both forms of cobalt oxide are essential in industrial applications, from catalysts and pigments to advanced materials for electronics and energy storage.
