Acesulfame potassium, often denoted as Ace-K or E950, is a non-nutritive sweetener used worldwide. It is approximately 200 times sweeter than sucrose (table sugar) and contributes negligible calories to the diet due to its intense sweetness. Discovered in 1967, Ace-K gained FDA approval in 1988 and is used in a variety of foods and beverages as a sugar substitute. It is heat-stable, making it suitable for cooking and baking. Ace-K has a clean, sweet taste without bitter aftertaste and blends well with other sweeteners. Concerns have been raised regarding its safety, though regulatory bodies worldwide, including the FDA and EFSA, have approved it as safe for human consumption within recommended levels.
